Hybrid sol-gel coatings for corrosion mitigation of reinforced concrete structures

Corrosion protection of metallic substrates using coatings is an active and important research area in materials science and industry. Through the application of coatings, corrosion can be minimized and controlled by one of three main mechanisms or a combination of these. Coatings can act as: i) a physical barrier preventing the contact between the corrosive medium and the metallic substrate and hindering ion migration among the coatings; ii) cathodic protection (sacrificial anode); iii) inhibition/ passivation species, including anodic and/or cathodic protection, that inhibits the action of the external corrosive agents. Hybrid sol-gel coatings are a new generation of multifunctional materials with a broad spectrum of useful properties and a diversity of application potential. The fundamentals of corrosion of reinforced concrete structures together with the application of sol-gel materials for corrosion mitigation will be presented and discussed.
